Population Studies

A. Rheumatic Heart Disease (Active - Phase ICompleted)

► More than 3,000 school children underwent comprehensive clinical and echocardiographic screening for rheumatic heart disease.

► In the second phase of the study, individuals with definite and/or possible rheumatic heart disease are being followed up to determine the progression of the disease.

► All patients on the database are being monitored closely to ensure adherence to regular penicillin prophylaxis and secure timely surgical/percutaneous intervention for deserving candidates.

► The Aswan Heart Centre is currently supporting the creation of similar screening programs in rural Ethiopia and Malawi.

► 2 physicians from these areas have recently completed a 6-months training program on the techniques of echocardiographic screening for rheumatic heart disease with some refinements introduced by our centre.

B. Aswan Heart Study (Study Design and Personnel Recruitment Phase).

► The Aswan Heart Study is an epidemiological study that aims to characterize the full profile of heart disease and cardiovascular risk factors.

► Subjects recruited during the first phase of the study will undergo a series of clinical, laboratory and extensive imaging investigations.

► In the second phase of the study, the recruited subjects will be followed up to determine the incidence of heart disease.
